Course Description
The Nexus at University of Michigan Engineering Cybersecurity Professional Bootcamp offers a 30-hour introductory course designed to introduce participants to the cybersecurity industry and the multitude of opportunities that exist within the current landscape. In addition, the course provides an overview of some of the core concepts in cybersecurity and previews how those concepts will be covered within the extended program. When the course ends, learners complete an assessment exam and consult with an admissions advisor who can help them make an informed decision on whether they are a good fit to continue to the extended program and if pursuing a career in cybersecurity is the best choice for their future.
Students who enroll into the Nexus at University of Michigan Engineering Cybersecurity Professional Bootcamp Introductory Course will need to complete the Pre-Course Survey in order to complete the enrollment requirements for this course.
Course Outline
The Introductory Course begins with the fundamentals of information security and risk management, ensuring that participants understand the business context of cybersecurity. Participants are then introduced to networking and network security fundamentals, the Linux and Microsoft platforms and related security, and unique considerations for software security. The concept and role of offensive security are introduced, and the course concludes with an explanation of how to contextualize threats and threat actors within the previous topics.

Learner Outcomes
This introductory course aids learners in assessing if cybersecurity is the right career path for them. Nexus instructors and advisors will evaluate each student’s passion, aptitude, and ability to land a position in the cybersecurity field. At the end of the introductory course, learners take a summary exam and have a one-on-one assessment to examine their future in the program and discuss their expectations of working in cybersecurity
